And, of course, if you have trouble remembering which is west and which is east, you just have to remember Never Eat Shredded Wheat...North East South West...or my favourite, Naughty Elephants Spray Water ;-)

I have a north facing garden, so the kitchen and back of the house tends to be quite dark whilst we all get blinded in the living room!

There are ways in nature to learn the directions, like moss growing on the north side of trees (I think, but could be wrong!).

But if in doubt and have no way of telling - simply decide which way YOU want north to be and go from there. Same in your home, if part of your house seems to be where north should be, then that's the north, even if it isn't.

It's a case of "why is this the rule" with the answer "because I say so".

Much love

Blaidd

I'm lucky there Scarlet my garden is south facing so I get the sun all day so if the sun's on my back then I'm facing north,I agree with a compass but you get a certain amount of magnetic pull so it actually naturally points to magnetic north my advice look for the sun at it's highest point and turn your back on it true north xxx

Not a silly question at all!

Some people can tell the direction by judging where the sun is etc..but I tend to use a compass. I only have a little cheap toy one, only cost a few pence.

A compass needle will always point North. So if you stand with the compass flat in the palm of your hand the needle will point north.
